Congratulations to Nelson Leite, Sandra Crivello, PAMA MEDIA, LLC, and everyone who helped bring the first North American Luso Talent (NALT) Competition to life!
Held on October 4, 2026, at the Newark Pavilion in Newark, California, NALT introduced something fresh and exciting to the Portuguese-American community: a professionally organized competition dedicated to discovering, showcasing, and celebrating talent from within our own community.
Seven Portuguese-American singers from across the country stepped into the spotlight: Jamie Villalobos of Tulare, California; Fallon Nunes of San José, California; Shawn Doran of Seattle, Washington; Tori Costa of Newport, Rhode Island; Danny Correia of Santa Clara, California; Carmen Machado of Hilmar, California; and Ariel Teixeira of San Lorenzo, California.
Adding to the national representation of the event, Portuguese-American comedian Vanessa Medeiros traveled from Fall River, Massachusetts, to serve as emcee, bringing her personality and humor to the NALT stage.
At the end of the competition, Danny Correia captured the People’s Choice Award, selected by the audience, while Fallon Nunes was named the Jury’s Grand Prize winner.
A very special congratulations goes to Fallon Nunes for making a little Portuguese-American entertainment history as the first-ever winner of North American Luso Talent!
Fallon’s musical roots also make the accomplishment especially meaningful. She began her musical journey with the Portuguese Band of San Jose, where she had the opportunity to play alongside her father and brother. From those early experiences making music with family and within the Portuguese community to now becoming NALT’s inaugural Grand Prize winner, her story is a wonderful example of how our Portuguese organizations can help nurture talent and create a foundation for something much bigger.
Congratulations, Fallon – the first NALT winner and a name that will forever be connected to the beginning of this new competition!
But perhaps the biggest winner of the evening was Portuguese-American talent itself.
Our community has no shortage of gifted singers, musicians, performers, and entertainers. What is sometimes missing is the opportunity for those individuals to get in front of an audience and show what they can do. NALT created exactly that kind of opportunity.
While organizers and supporters undoubtedly hoped to see a larger Portuguese community presence in the audience for this inaugural event, that should not overshadow what was accomplished. Starting something completely new is never easy, particularly when introducing a new concept to the community.
Those who attended were able to see firsthand the seriousness, effort, and professional organization that went into NALT. This wasn’t simply another community gathering. There was a clear effort to create a legitimate talent competition that performers could be proud to participate in and audiences could look forward to each year.
And that may ultimately be one of the most important accomplishments of this first edition.
Now the word can spread.
As more people hear about NALT and recognize the quality of the production, organization, and talent involved, hopefully next year we will see the larger community turnout an event like this deserves. Great community traditions don’t always begin with a packed hall. Sometimes they begin with a group of people willing to take a chance on an idea, do it right, and give it an opportunity to grow.
NALT accomplished that.
There is something special about seeing our community come together not only to celebrate established performers, but also to open doors for new and emerging talent. NALT has the potential to grow into an anticipated annual event and become another important part of the Portuguese-American cultural calendar.
Congratulations again to Nelson Leite, Sandra Crivello, PAMA MEDIA, LLC, the entire NALT team, Vanessa Medeiros, all seven competitors, the judges, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who believed in and supported this inaugural event.
And once again, special congratulations to Danny Correia on receiving the first People’s Choice Award and to Fallon Nunes on becoming the first NALT Grand Prize winner!
The first North American Luso Talent competition is now in the books. It was a great beginning, and as word spreads about what was created in Newark this year, we look forward to seeing both the competition and its audience grow in 2027.
Most importantly, we look forward to seeing who takes the NALT stage next!
